A crown (or cap) is a hard covering that encases the entire tooth surface restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
Although there are several types of crowns, porcelain and zirconia (tooth colored crowns) are the most popular, because they resemble your natural teeth. They are highly durable and will last many years. Porcelain and zirconia crowns are designed to match the shape, size, and color of your teeth giving you a natural, long-lasting, beautiful smile.
Reasons for crowns:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Decayed teeth
- Fractured fillings
- Large fillings
- Tooth has a root canal
What To Expect When You Get A Dental Crown
Getting a crown usually requires two appointments. At your first appointment, we will take several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown.
While you are numb, our dentist will work on the tooth to remove any decay and shape the surface for proper crown fit. He will then place a temporary crown with temporary cement and check your bite to ensure your comfort.
The temporary crown will stay on for approximately two weeks. Meanwhile, Dr. Huffman will work with highly-skilled, professional dental lab technicians to create your crown ensuring that a perfect fit and his signature beautifully natural look is achieved.
At the second appointment, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your permanent crown will be carefully placed to attain comfortable spacing and bite.
Now, with a fully restored tooth and beautiful smile, you can enjoy confidence and comfort.
Care instructions for a dental crown mirror those for natural teeth, so many patients enjoy their low maintenance. You are encouraged to regularly visit us to check your crown and overall oral health.
